Intro
HowTheySay (howtheysay.com) is a language-learning tool. It helps you find a word or phrase in captioned YouTube videos and play the clip at that timestamp through YouTube’s official embed / IFrame Player API.
Affiliation
HowTheySay is an independent service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube, Google, YouGlish, or any video uploader.
YouTube Terms
HowTheySay uses YouTube API Services (including the embeddable player). By using HowTheySay, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service.
Content ownership
We do not claim ownership of YouTube videos, audio, thumbnails, channel names, or caption text. That content remains the property of the respective uploaders and/or of YouTube / Google, subject to their terms and applicable law.
How playback works
Videos are streamed by YouTube inside the official player. We do not download, store, re-host, or redistribute YouTube audiovisual files. If a video owner disables embedding, we may show a link to watch the video on YouTube instead.
Caption index
To find the right moment in a video, we may store limited caption text and timestamps (and related metadata such as video ID, title, and channel name) in our search index. This is for navigation and learning only. It does not transfer copyright in that content to us.
Allowed use
The service is provided for personal language learning. You may not use HowTheySay to scrape, bulk-download, mirror, or redistribute YouTube videos or to circumvent YouTube’s technical restrictions.
Content removal
If you are a content owner and want a video removed from our index, email hello@howtheysay.com with the YouTube URL or video ID. We will review and, where appropriate, remove it as soon as reasonably possible.
Our materials
The HowTheySay name, logo, website design, and original text are owned by HowTheySay. © 2026 HowTheySay. All rights reserved. This notice covers our own materials only — not third-party YouTube content.
Disclaimer
The service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that every search will return a clip, that captions are accurate, or that any particular video will remain available.
Privacy
